Logotype & Identity
what I hate
For the record, I do not want this subject header to be misunderstood...I thoroughly enjoy creating logos/logotypes for friends and clients. I just hate the misuse of the word 'logo'. I often delineate subtly to people that, for me, a 'logo' is the image/symbol/mark of a company/institution/product and a 'logotype' is the wordform or distinct lettering that announces said company/institution/product's name. The two together, I call a signature.
Wrapping it up in that tiny little package and putting a bow on it makes sense—and as a result, all is right in the world. I 'hate' when it's called a logo.
That said, I put a lot of stock into the notion of simplicity of message, simplicity of form. If it reads well in black and white, then it will read well in any other execution. Sometimes I feel a line of type says it all, but I do my best to satiate my type desires while adhering to what the client needs.
The following, some old, some new, represent a select cross-section of signatures I have produced that I feel are 'different' and are intended to generate at least a bit of discussion.
